I've tried
YaCy some time ago. It's the only 100% libre search engine I know which is great. But can't promise the search results will be satisfactory. Back then you couldn't even recognize what the search query was from the search results. It was that bad. Recently, it has improved a little bit.
Pros:
- Decentralized and peer-to-peer so good for privacy
- Complete
software freedom- Can be configured to your liking
- Can be used in other purposes (e.g. you can create a search engine for your own website exclusively, or host your own instance)
Cons:
- Not the best search results (at least not at the time of writing this)
- UI+UX is not great
- Found no good instances on the web. So have to be run on own machine. (But thankfully it just works and easy to run. See below for details.)
DistroTube video on YaCy
This video gives a nice little overview of YaCy and how it can be used.
